Iran begins process of linking its power grid to Russia’s through Azerbaijan

Iran has begun the process of linking its power grid to Russia’s grid. Iran’s Ministry of Energy announced that the country completed an initial synchronization between its electricity grid and those of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Synchronisation refers to the process by which electrical systems’ frequencies are matched, and this process will continue to be carried out between the four countries until the interconnection with Russia is finished. The connection of the electricity networks is expected to help Iran stabilise its power network and facilitate electricity imports and exports.

Iraq was the first of Iran’s neighbor whose national electricity network was synchronised with Iran’s, in November 2019.
