Iran announces plans to build a 1 GW solar power plant in Qazvin Province

Iran’s Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organisation (SATBA) has announced that the country plans to develop a 1 GW solar power project in the Qazvin Province of northern Iran. This would be one of Iran’s largest solar projects. This initiative is part of a series of solar parks development in the country and is expected to double the renewable energy output of Iran once fully operational. In addition, plans for constructing smaller scale solar power plants (up to 3 MW) in other Iranian cities were unveiled, with electricity generated to be sold to SATBA.

As of end-2021, solar represented less than 1% of Iran’s installed capacity and power generation with only 473 MW installed and 539 GWh produced. However, close to 3 GW of solar projects are currently under development in the country. In 2019, the Markazi province announced plans to build another solar power plant with a capacity of 1 GW, near the city of Saveh. In April 2022, SATBA launched a tender for 4 GW of solar power projects, which are expected to be operational by 2025.
