Iran and Russia sign US$25bn deal for four nuclear reactors

Iran and Russia have signed a US$25bn agreement to build four nuclear power reactors in southern Iran. Each reactor will have a capacity of 1.25 GW, for a total of 5 GW, although no timeline for construction was disclosed.

In addition, Russia’s state nuclear agency Rosatom and Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the design and construction of small modular reactors (SMRs) in Iran. The agreement focuses on the peaceful use of nuclear energy and includes provisions for technology transfer and the domestic production of nuclear plant equipment.

Russia has been planning to build up to eight nuclear reactors in Iran since at least 2014, as part of Iran’s long-term goal to develop 20 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2040. Currently, Iran operates just one nuclear power plant, the Bushehr facility in the south, with a capacity of 1 GW.
