Ineos (UK) launches an up to 8 MtCO2/year CCS project off Denmark

The British chemicals group Ineos (operator) and the German oil and gas company Wintershall Dea have launched the Greensand carbon capture and storage (CCS) project, initiating the first storage of CO2 in a reservoir in the Danish North Sea. The project, which targets a storage capacity of up to 1.5 MtCO2/year by 2025-2026 and up to 8 MtCO2/year by end-2030, will use the depleted Nini West oil field as a storage site for the CO2. By early April 2023, residual emissions from a Belgian industrial plant, collectively representing up to 15,000 tCO2, will be stored during the ongoing demonstration phase. The two companies will each have a 40% stake in the project, while the remaining 20% will be held by Denmark’s state-owned oil and gas company Nordsøfonden.
