The UK petrochemicals group INEOS, Harbour Energy and the Danish North Sea Fund (Nordsøfonden) have officially opened their Greensand CO2 storage facility off Esbjerg (Denmark). The project aims to permanently store up to 400,000 tCO₂/year in this first commercial phase, scaling toward a potential of up to 4–8 Mt/year at full capacity.
INEOS plans to source CO₂ primarily from Danish biomethane plants, to liquefy it, deliver it by truck to a dedicated CO₂ terminal at Port Esbjerg, to ship it aboard purpose-built CO₂ carrier Carbon Destroyer 1, and to inject into the Nini West depleted oil reservoir located 250 km offshore and approximately 1,800 metres beneath the seabed.
