Indonesia launches construction of a 1.8 GtCO2 CCUS project in West Papua

The Indonesian Government has launched the construction of a carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) project in Indonesia’s West Papua Province, which will have the potential to store up to 1.8 GtCO2. The Ubadari project will be operated by The UK oil and gas company BP, which is expected to invest US$2.6bn in it. First carbon injection is scheduled for 2026.

The launch of construction for the CCUS project follows the inauguration by the Indonesian Government of BP's US$4.8bn, 3.8 Mt/year Tangguh Train 3 LNG project in West Papua, which was completed in October 2023.

Earlier in November 2023, the Indonesian state-owned energy company Pertamina announced partnerships with the US oil and gas groups ExxonMobil and Chevron to invest in carbon capture and storage facilities in Indonesia. The country is estimated to have a carbon storage capacity of 8 Gt in its depleted reservoirs, while an additional 400 Gt of capacity could be available if the country uses its saline aquifers.
