Indonesia inaugurates Southeast Asia's largest floating solar plant

The Indonesian Government has inaugurated Southeast Asia's largest floating solar plant, totalling 145 MW (192 MW peak), located above the Cirata Reservoir in Indonesia’s West Java Province. The power plant, which comprises more than 340,000 solar panels, occupies an area of 250 hectares and is expected to produce 300 GWh/year of clean electricity.

The floating solar plant was built by China's PowerChina Huadong Engineering Corporation and was a collaboration project between Indonesia's state power utility PLN and the Emirati energy company Masdar. It required an investment of US$145m. In September 2023, Masdar and PLN agreed to develop an up to 500 MW expansion to the Cirata floating solar power plant.

As of end-2022, solar represented less than 1% of Indonesia’s installed capacity and power generation, with 272 MW and 444 GWh respectivey. The country currently has about 13 GW of solar capacity under development.
