Indonesia and Singapore advance 3.4 GW low-carbon electricity export plan

Singapore and Indonesia have signed new agreements involving Danantara Indonesia and Singapore-based firms Keppel Electric, Sembcorp Industries, and Singapore Energy Interconnections, aimed at advancing discussions on future cross-border electricity trade (Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) statement, 06/07/2026).

The electricity deal follows a series of earlier agreements reached between Indonesia and Singapore in 2025, including a plan to supply 3.4 GW of low-carbon power to Singapore by 2035.

“Both governments will also develop and adopt a Cross-Border Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) Framework, aligned with international standards, to support the tracking and accounting of cross-border RECs ahead of the first flow of electrons”, added the ministry’s statement. Singapore is planning to import more than 6 GW of low-carbon electricity by 2035 from Indonesia, Australia, Vietnam, and Cambodia (Enerdata Global Energy Research).

In addition, Singapore and Indonesia have signed a memorandum of understanding on carbon credits under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Under this agreement, Singapore and Indonesia will exchange information and technical expertise on carbon markets, work towards an implementation agreement aligned with Article 6, and identify high-integrity carbon credit projects.
