According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) of Indonesia, 93 hydrogen development projects are currently under way in the country, representing a total investment of IDR32tbn (USD2bn). These projects are in line with the ESDM directive to accelerate the "de-dieselisation", i.e., replacing diesel-fired power generation with cleaner alternatives.
Among the projects, Indonesia's state-owned power utility PT PLN is carrying out a proof-of-concept project on Rengit Island, using solar power coupled with hydrogen energy storage to power remote communities, while state-owned energy group Pertamina has started green hydrogen production from geothermal energy at the Ulubelu field in Lampung.
