India's wind capacity expected to increase by 3-3.5 GW in 2018-2019

Over the past 15 months, the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and distribution utilities have awarded 7.6 GW of wind power capacity to several companies in the Indian states of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu and plan to allocate another 10 GW over the 2019-2020 period. The MNRE estimates that this is in line with the trajectory announced in November 2017 to achieve a cumulative wind capacity target of 60 GW by 2022.

In the current financial year, domestic wind capacity is expected to rise by 3-3.5 GW, which is almost twice the capacity awarded in the last fiscal year (1.7 GW). However, the challenge of connectivity and long-term access to inter-state transmission network have hindered several projects. The transmission infrastructure may not be sufficient to provide connectivity to the projects bid out so far and the MNRE plans to modernise the existing inter-state transmission infrastructure as well.
