The Indian energy company Torrent Power has signed an agreement with the government of the Indian state of Maharashtra for the development of three pumped-storage hydropower projects totalling 5.7 GW in capacity across Maharashtra. The projects will require an investment of INR270bn (US$3.3bn). The three projects will be built at different sites: Karjat (3 GW) in the district of Raigarh, Maval (1.2 GW) in the district of Pune and Junnar (1.5 GW) also in Pune. Torrent Power plans to execute those projects over a period of five years. They are planned to provide a minimum of six hours per day of energy storage.
Torrent Power currently has an installed capacity of 4.1 GW, including 2.7 GW of gas and 1.1 GW of renewables. Besides the three announced pumped hydro project, the company currently has 700 MW of renewable capacity under development.
At the national level, India plans to add 79 hydropower projects with a total capacity of 30 GW, including 11 pumped-storage projects totalling 8.7 GW, during the period 2019-2020 to 2029-2030. The country has an installed pumped-storage capacity of 4.8 GW (end of 2021). Hydropower accounts for 12% of India's total capacity, with 51.4 GW.
