The Indian state-owned power utility NTPC has approved an investment proposal for the Lara Super Thermal Power Project, Stage 2, which will have a capacity of 1.6 GW (2x800 MW) and be located in Mahloi, Pussore, Raigarh, in the state of Chhattisgarh (central India). The project will be set up at an estimated cost of INR155.3bn (US$1.88bn). NTPC already operates a two-units 1.6 GW coal-fired plant on the Mahloi site, with unit 1 commissionned in 2018 and unit 2 in 2020.
NTPC is the largest power generator in India, with a consolidated capacity (including joint ventures and subsidiaries) of 73 GW (i.e. around 15% of the total), including 59 GW of coal. As of end-2022, India’s coal-fired capacity reached nearly 262 GW, about 57% of the country’s capacity mix. Around 48 GW of coal-fired projects are currently under construction, and more than 57 GW under development.
