India’s NTPC REL partners with Rajasthan state for 10 GW of renewables

NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL, 100% owned by India’s National Thermal Power Corporation or NTPC) has partnered with the government of the western Indian state of Rajasthan to develop 10 GW of renewable capacity in a planned “ultra-mega renewable energy power parks” (UMREPP). Details about the investment required and the proposed location for the future complex have not yet been revealed.

NTPC Group is targeting 60 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2032, which will account for about 45% of its overall power generation portfolio. NTPC currently possesses about 2 GW of solar, wind and hydropower plants in operation. NTPC Renewable Energy, since its inception in 2020, has secured 4 GW of renewable capacity by bidding in various tenders. NTPC Renewable Energy is also developing a 4.75 GW capacity UMREPP in Kutch, Gujarat state.

In 2021, solar and wind accounted for nearly 20% of installed capacity in India, with respectively 49.3 GW and 40.1 GW. The country aims to develop 175 GW of renewable capacity by 2022, including 100 GW of solar.
