The government of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh (central-eastern India) has announced it plans to build a 1.32 GW coal-fired plant in the Korba district of the state. The proposed plant, which will be the largest of its kind in the Chhattisgarh state, will consist of two 660 MW units and will be built using super critical technology.
With this new coal-fired plant, the Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Ltd's (CSPGCL) generation capacity would increase to 4.3 GW. The state government also plans to work at an accelerated pace to get the necessary approvals in order to commission the plant by 2030 or 2031.
Coal remains a major energy source as it dominates the India’s electricity mix, reaching 73% of the the country’s 1,700 TWh of power generation in 2021, with an installed capacity of 239 GW generating 1,260 TWh of electricity.
