India’s CEA approves two pumped-storage hydro projects in Maharashtra (2.5 GW)

The Indian Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has approved two new pumped-storage hydropower projects in India’s Maharashtra State, totalling a capacity of 2.5 GW. The two projects are the 1.5 GW Bhavali PSP, developed by JSW Energy, and the 1 GW Bhivpuri PSP, developed by Tata Power. Both projects are expected to be commissioned in 2028 and provide over 15 GWh of energy storage capacity.

Earlier in September 2024, Maharashtra signed memorandums of understanding with the central government-owned power utility NHPC and THCD, an affiliate of NTPC, to develop 10 pumped-storage hydropower projects in the state with a total capacity of 14.1 GW.

Hydropower accounted for 10% of India's total capacity at end-2023, with 52.1 GW, including 4.8 GW of pumped-storage. In late 2021, India announced plans to add 79 hydropower projects with a total capacity of 30 GW, including 11 pumped-storage projects totalling 8.7 GW, during the period 2019-2020 to 2029-2030.
