The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) has approved a request for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) filed by Indianapolis Power & Light (IPL) for the development of a 650 MW CCGT power plant near Martinsville (United States). The group would invest US$600m in the new project, which would be built at IPL's Eagle Valley 341 MW coal-fired power plant. Construction on the CCGT will begin during the summer 2014 with a completion date in 2017. In addition, IPL will invest US$36m in the conversion of two units (106 MW each) at the Harding Street coal-fired power plant to natural gas. The conversion of Harding Street Units 5 and 6 will begin in the fall 2015 and will be complete by early 2016. In 2017, IPL’s reliance on coal-fired generation will have decreased to only 54% from nearly 80% ten years before, with natural gas, wind, solar and oil powering the rest of its customers’ needs.
