Indian government studies site for 4 GW UMPP project in Bihar

The Ministry of Power of India is evaluating a site in Bihar to develop a 4,000 MW ultra mega power project (UMPP) and has started to discuss the allocation of local coal blocks for the project with the Ministry of Coal. Coal supply could also be ensured by mines located in Jharkhand or in Odisha. So far, 4 UMPP have been awarded: Sasan (Madhya Pradesh), Krishnapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and Tilaiya (Jharkhand) were bagged by Reliance Power, while Tata Power is operating the Mundra UMPP in Gujarat. Two UMPP are under development and should be awarded soon: nine companies, including NTPC, Tata Power, NHPC, Adani Power, JSW Energy, Jindal Steel and Power, Sterlite Infraventures, CLP India and Larsen & Toubro, have applied for the Odisha UMPP project, while eight (NTPC, Adani Power, CLP India, GMR Energy, Jindal Steel and Power, JSW Energy, L&T and Sterlite Infraventure) have applied for the Cheyyur UMPP project.
