The Indian government has decided to cancel the bidding process for the construction of two 4,000 MW Ultra Mega Power Projects (UMPPs) in Bedabahal in Odisha and in Cheyyur in Tamil Nadu (India) and to set up a committee to move the projects forward. In October 2014, state-run NTPC became the sole bidder for developing the projects after Indian independent power producers Adani Power, GMR, Jindal Steel and Power and Sterlite withdrew from the bidding process for the construction of two UMPPs in Odisha and Tamil Nadu. The 4 GW Odisha coal-fired project, based on domestic coal resources, is estimated at Rs 25,000 crore (US$4.1bn). The Cheyyur project in Tamil Nadu, based on imported coal, is estimated at Rs 24,200 crore (US$3.9bn).
So far, four UMPPs have been awarded: Tata Power is operating the Mundra UMPP in Gujarat, while Reliance Power won Sasan (Madhya Pradesh), Krishnapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and Tilaiya (Jharkhand).
