India will introduce 1.2 GW floor for foreign nuclear reactors

The Indian government has decided to introduce a 1.2 GW floor for all future foreign nuclear reactors in India, to raise the nuclear generation capacity.

This 1.2 GW capacity floor is nearly twice the capacity of locally-developed Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) in India: existing reactors are rated between 220 MW and 540 MW, with a new PHWR developed by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) reaching 700 MW. Foreign nuclear reactors to be installed in current projects reach 1,000 MW (1,000 MW VVER reactors built by Rosatom at Kudankulam).

This decision will pave the way for a formal approval of a capacity increase for the Kovvada nuclear project in Andhra Pradesh, where six AP-1000 reactors will be built; the reactors would then be rated 1,208 MW each. It should also lead to an approval of the Jaitapur nuclear project, where six 1,650 MW reactors are planned.
