India starts building the 2.88 GW Dibang hydro project in Arunachal Pradesh

The Indian Government has launched the construction of the 2,880 MW Dibang hydropower project, located in India’s north-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh. The INR319bn (US$3.9bn) project is being developed by the state-owned company NHPC and is expected to be commissioned in early 2032. It will be able to generate more than 11 TWh/year of electricity once completed. The project was first approved by the Indian Government in March 2023.

In late 2021, India announced plans to add 79 hydropower projects with a total capacity of 30 GW, including 11 pumped-storage projects totalling 8.7 GW, during the period 2019-2020 to 2029-30. As of end- 2022, hydropower accounted for 11% of India's total capacity, with nearly 52 GW. In November 2023, India’s Central Electricity Authority approved two hydropower projects submitted by the state-owned power producer SJVN to be developed in Arunachal Pradesh with a total capacity of 3,777 MW and the Indian Government announced plans to develop 13 new hydropower projects in the State of Arunachal Pradesh, aiming to add 13 GW of power to the national grid.
