India reached 9 GW of solar capacity at year-end 2016

According to preliminary data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) of India, total installed solar power capacity in India exceeded the 9 GW threshold at the end of December 2016, rising to 9,012 MW.

The state of Tamil Nadu accounted for 18% of the total capacity, with 1,591 MW, followed by Rajasthan (1,318 MW, 15%) and Gujarat (1,159 MW, 13%); the three states accounted for nearly half of solar capacities. However, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu have curtailed solar power in recent months and capacity additions remain much below the target: India only commissioned 2,250 MW between April and December 2016, compared to a 12 GW target for the April 2016-March 2017 period. India has set a target of 100 GW of solar capacity in 2022, including 40 GW from solar rooftop capacity.

Preliminary wind capacity data were also released: wind capacity rose from 25.1 GW in 2015 to 28.7 GW at the end of 2016, with Tamil Nadu accounting for 27% of the country's capacity (7,694 MW); at the end of 2016, 4,666 MW were installed in Maharashtra, 4,442 MW in Gujarat and 4,217 MW in Rajasthan.
