India plans USD85bn investment in power grid to connect 900 GW by 2035-36

The Indian Ministry of Power has released its National Resource Adequacy Plan, outlining a comprehensive roadmap to meet India’s rising electricity demand through a balanced energy mix, and its Transmission Plan for Integration, seeking to connect over 900 GW of non-fossil power capacity by 2035-2036 (Ministry press release, 19/03/2026).

Betting on the surge in renewable capacity, the plan considers investing INR 7.93tn (USD85bn) in the development of 137,500 km of transmission lines and 827,600 MVA of substation capacity to avoid renewable energy bottlenecks.

In February 2026, India's non-fossil fuel power capacity stood at 275 GW, i.e., 55% of its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity in 2030. Solar and wind capacities are expected to rise to 664 GW by 2035-2036, including 509 GW for solar and 155 GW for wind.
