India’s Prime Minister has announced that the government is working to open the nuclear energy sector to private participation. Enabling private companies to enter the nuclear industry is expected to strengthen India’s energy security and bolster its technological leadership. According to the Prime Minister, establishing a stronger role for private players will create opportunities in small modular reactors (SMRs), advanced reactor systems, and nuclear innovations. As part of this initiative, the government has included the Atomic Energy Bill 2025 for introduction during the Winter Session of Parliament starting 1 December 2025.
India has set an ambitious target: expanding its nuclear power capacity to 100 GW by 2047, up from 8.2 GW at the end of 2024.
