India plans to exceed 225 GW of renewable power capacity by 2022

The Indian government plans to exceed the 225 GW renewable power capacity milestone by 2022, when renewable capacity should reach 228 GW. This is much more than the 175 GW target set in 2015 and that is likely to be crossed before 2022.

According to government statistics, India's renewable capacity - including solar, wind, small hydropower and biomass - stood at 70 GW in April 2018 and another 40 GW is under tendering or construction. Solar capacity should increase from the current 33 GW, with 16 GW expected in fiscal year 2018, 34 GW in 2019 and 30 GW in 2020 to 113 GW in 2022. Wind capacity would increase from 47 GW (operational and due for 2018) to 67 GW by 2022 (+10 GW in 2019 and +10 GW in 2020). In addition, 31 GW of floating solar and offshore wind could be developed by 2022.

In order to reach this capacity by 2022, the government will multiply the auctions in the next months. In April 2018, the state-run thermal power group National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) issued tenders for 2,000 MW of wind and solar power.
