India plans to build 10 new 700 MW nuclear reactors across the country

The Indian government has announced plans to build more nuclear power plants to increase the country’s production of clean energy. The government has approved five new sites and given the financial authorisation to build 10 new 700 MW pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs). The schedule of the projects and the location of the sites have not yet been disclosed.

At the end of 2021, India has 22 operational reactors totalling 6.8 GW of installed nuclear capacity (less than 2% of the country’s total installed capacity). A 700 MW KAPP-3 reactor was also connected to the grid in May 2022. India currently has 11 reactors under construction totalling 8.7 GW.

In November 2022, India submitted its Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), in which the country plans to increase its nuclear capacity threefold by 2032.
