The Indian Ministry of Power has released its Roadmap for achieving the goal of 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047. The plan calls for the installation of approximately 4.14 GW per year to achieve its goals, which would require a total capital investment of INR19,280bn (US$218bn).
The document plans to ease the rules in the sector to allow private investment in nuclear, foreign investors and technology suppliers to the country. It also recommends that new nuclear sites should be developed in existing sites, while eliminating thermal plants at those locations. The roadmap aims to reduce project timelines and recommends to expedite the use of PWR technology and to adopt and "indigenise" imported reactor technologies. Maximum possible capacity addition through large reactors (over 700 MW) should be preferred, while small modular reactors (SMRs) should be used for captive use.
