The Indian Government has launched 20% ethanol blended petrol (E20) in 15 cities located in 11 Indian states and Union territories, as part of a programme to increase use of biofuels to cut emissions as well as dependence on foreign exchange imports. The launch was made ahead of the originally planned launch in April 2023.
Currently, 10% ethanol is blended in petrol in India and the government plans for the country to totally switch to 20% ethanol blended petrol by 2025, five years earlier than the originally planned 2030 target. India went from 1.5% ethanol bended petrol in 2014 to 10% in June 2022.
India has pledged to reach net-zero emissions in 2070. The country aims to reach a non-fossil energy capacity of 500 GW by 2030 and to meet 50% of its electricity requirements from renewables by 2030. In addition, India intends to reduce emissions by 1 GtCO2eq and carbon intensity by 45% by 2030. In its first NDC, the country pledged to reduce its CO2 emission intensity of GDP by 33-35% by 2030 relative to 2005.
