India’s power sector has achieved two key milestones, according to the Ministry of Power (statement, 29/10/2025). As of 30 September 2025, the country’s total installed electricity capacity surpassed 500 GW, reaching 500.89 GW. Of this, non-fossil fuel sources (including renewable energy, hydro, and nuclear) accounted for 256.09 GW, or over 51% of the total, while fossil-fuel-based sources made up 244.8 GW, roughly 49%.
- During the first half of FY 2025–26 (April–September 2025), India added 28 GW of non-fossil capacity and 5.1 GW of fossil-fuel capacity.
- Furthermore, on 29 July 2025, India achieved a record share of renewable generation, with renewables supplying 51.5% of the nation’s total electricity demand (203 GW) on that day.
With this progress, India has already reached one of its major COP26 goals, which aimed for 50% of installed electric power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030, accomplishing the target five years ahead of schedule.
