The Indian Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has granted approval to start excavation for building two 700 MW reactors at the Kaiga nuclear plant in Karwar district of Karnataka (southern India). The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), a state-owned company, is expected to start building Kaiga 5 and 6, two Indian-designed 700 MW pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs), in 2023. The AERB had granted siting consent for the two nuclear power plants in November 2021. The Kaiga nuclear plant currently comprises four 220 MW Indian pressurized heavy water reactors (IHWRs).
In 2017, the Union Cabinet approved the construction of ten 700 MW nuclear power plants in fleet mode, in an attempt to accelerate construction times and reduce costs.
