India approves two hydropower projects (3.8 GW) in Arunachal Pradesh

India’s Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has approved two hydropower projects submitted by the state-owned power producer SJVN to be developed in the State of Arunachal Pradesh with a total capacity of 3,777 MW and worth around INR400bn (US$4.8bn). The Detailed Project Reports submitted by SJVN correspond to the 3,097 MW Etalin Hydroelectric Power (HEP), the largest hydropower project under development in India with an expected investment of around INR328bn (US$3.95bn), and the 680 MW Attunli HEP worth INR68.6bn (US$820m). 

In July 2023, the Indian State of Arunachal Pradesh had awarded to SJVN five hydropower projects to be developed on the tributaries of the Dibang River, totalling 5,097 MW of capacity with the Etalin HEP and the Attunli HEP among them. The projects had previously been awarded to private developers but were transferred to SJVN to accelerate their development. India has an installed hydropower capacity of 51.8 GW accounting for 11% of the country’s total capacity (483 GW).
