India approves scheme to deploy 50 GWh of new BESS by 2033

The Indian government has approved a INR1.86tn (USD19.4bn) scheme to strengthen intra-state transmission systems (InSTS) and enable the evacuation of up to 135 GW of renewable energy across the country by FY 2032-2033 (Indian government press release, 30/09/2026).

The Green Energy Corridor Phase III (GEC-III) scheme dedicates INR1.4tn (USD14bn) for transmission infrastructure and INR500bn (USD5bn) for the deployment of 50 GWh of BESS. Battery storage systems will be deployed at renewable energy generation sites and other strategic grid locations to address renewable intermittency, transmission congestion, peak-hour curtailment and non-solar-hour demand.

Under the GEC-III scheme, greenfield transmission projects will be developed through tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) mode, while brownfield upgrades and network-strengthening works will be executed under a cost-plus basis (CPB) mechanism. State Transmission Utilities will act as the implementing agencies, while Transmission Service Providers will develop projects under a Build-Own-Operate-Maintain (BOOM) model.

According to the announcement, the scheme is aligned with India's objective of reaching 900 GW of installed non-fossil-fuel capacity by 2035.
