India approves eight new solar projects totalling nearly 5 GW

The Indian Government has approved eight solar projects totalling 4,995 MW, which will all be located in the Bundelkhand region of the state of Uttar Pradesh (northern India). The approved solar parks include the Jalaun Solar Park (1,200 MW), the Chhatarpur Solar Park (950 MW), the Chitrakoot Solar Park (800 MW), the Barethi Solar Park (630 MW), the Lalitpur Solar Park (600 MW), the Jhansi Solar Park (600 MW), the UP Solar Park (150 MW) and the Kalpi Solar Park (65 MW).  The 1,200 MW Jalaun Solar Park is expected to require an investment of INR48bn (US$584m) and will be developed by Bundelkhand Saur Urja (BSUL), a joint venture company between Uttar Pradesh Non-Conventional Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) and National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC).

In 2022, the Uttar Pradesh government unveiled its Solar Energy Policy 2022, in which the state targets 22 GW of new solar projects to be installed by 2026-2027. At the end of 2021, solar and wind accounted for over 20% of installed capacity in India, with respectively 49 GW and 40 GW, while hydropower capacity surpassed 51 GW. India plans to increase its non-fossil fuel capacity to 500 GW and meet 50% of its energy requirements from renewables by 2030.
