India approves the 2.9 GW Dibang hydropower project in Arunachal Pradesh

The Indian Government has approved the estimated investment of INR319bn (US$3.9bn) for the 2,880 MW Dibang hydropower project, located in the north-eastern Indian region of Arunachal Pradesh, in an area disputed by China. The project is developed by the state-owned company NHPC and is expected to take nine years to build. The planned 278 metres high Dibang dam is India’s largest hydropower project. It will comprise twelve 240 MW turbines and will produce about 11.2 TWh/year of electricity.

Due the project being be developed over 5,000 hectares of mountain and forest, the approved investment includes INR67.2bn (US$814m) of government support for flood moderation and enabling infrastructure, such as road and bridges connecting the construction site.

India plans to add 79 hydropower projects with a total capacity of 30 GW, including 11 pumped-storage projects totalling 8.7 GW, during the period 2019-2020 to 2029-30. As of end- 2021, hydropower accounted for 12% of India's total capacity, with 51.4 GW.
