India aims to become carbon neutral by 2070

India has pledged to reach net-zero emissions in 2070. The country also aims to reach a non-fossil energy capacity of 500 GW by 2030 (from 144 GW in 2020) and to meet 50% of its electricity requirements from renewables by 2030 (up from 19% in 2020, including hydro). In addition, India intends to reduce emissions by 1 GtCO2eq and carbon intensity by 45% by 2030; it will seek to make its railway network carbon neutral by 2030 (estimated CO2 emission reduction of 60 Mt/year) and to replace light bulbs with LEDs (40 Mt/year of estimated emission reduction).

In its first NDC, the country pledged to reduce its CO2 emission intensity of GDP by 33-35% by 2030 relative to 2005. It also aimed for 40% of the total electricity capacity to be based on non-fossil fuel sources by 2030 (32% in 2020). CO2 emissions from energy use have more than quadrupled since 1990 to 2.2 GtO2eq. A historical decline was observed in 2020 (-5.5%) with the COVID-19 crisis.
