The New and Renewable Energy Ministry of India has signed power purchase agreements for solar capacity of as much as 100 MW to speed up solar power capacity addition in the country. India is also seeking expressions of interest for additional 700 MW. In 2009, the total PV capacity installed in India amounted to less than 8 MW. Moreover, other projects for 25 MW off-the grid power have also been approved, to supply energy to small villages, border areas and other remote places.
This plans are part of the thirteenth 5-year plan, which will be completed in 2022: the government has drawn up programmes that include the installation of 20,000 MW. The first phase of this plan will lead to the construction of 1,100 MW of grid-connected (plus 200 MW of off-grid) solar by 2013, using both photovoltaic and thermal solar technologies. 12,000 MW of wind power are presently being developed and the government plans on expanding this capacity to 48,000 MW within 15-20 years.
