Ilmatar seeks environmental approval for a 450 MW solar plant in Sweden

The Nordic energy company Ilmatar has applied for an environmental permit to develop the 450 MW Tönnersjö solar park in Halland County (southwestern Sweden). The proposed solar park covers 4.5 km2 comprised of production forests ready for harvesting, excluding areas with high nature values. The direct connection of the solar project to the national grid is expected to significantly enhance energy production in Sweden’s southern electricity area SE4.

The Tönnersjö solar project application marks a milestone for Ilmatar, surpassing 1 GW in project applications submitted to authorities, primarily concentrated in high-demand regions like southern Sweden. The company has over 6 GW in its project pipeline, with a focus on areas with lower nature values, such as impediments and production forests.

At the end of 2023, Sweden had a total installed capacity of 51 GW of which solar represented about 7% (3.5 GW).
