Ilmatar launches EIA for 4 GW offshore wind project in Finland

The Finnish independent renewable power producer Ilmatar has launched the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) programme for its 4 GW Bothnia offshore wind project, located in the Finnish Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The project is divided in two sub-areas, Bothnia and Bothnia West. They cover nearly 1,200 km2 and have a potential energy production capacity of 4 GW. The deadline for submitting comment is 14 June 2024. The company secured an offshore study permit for the projects in October 2023.

Ilmatar currently has 433 MW of renewable projects in operation (at the end of 2023) and the company targets 4 GW in 2027. In 2023, Ilmatar commissioned six onshore wind parks and one solar park in Finland. In April 2023, it was granted a seabed survey permit to conduct environmental surveys for the proposed 1.2 GW Vågskär offshore wind project, located in the southern part of the Bothnian Sea about 30 km north of Åland.
