IEA forecasts solar as the largest electricity source by 2050

According to two reports issued by the International Energy Agency (IEA), solar power could be the largest source of electricity by 2050, ahead of fossil fuels and other CO2-free energy sources such as nuclear, wind or hydro. Solar PV systems could account for up to 16% of the global power generation by 2050, while solar thermal electricity from CSP plants could account for 11%. These solar technologies would enable to avoid the emission of more than 6 GtCO2/year by 2050. Solar PV, which had more than 130 GW installed worldwide in late 2013 and added on average 100 MW, every day should continue to dominate solar installations until 2030; at this date, CSP should gain momentum thanks to thermal storage. Solar PV installations should remain led by China, followed by the United States, and would be mainly installed at final consumers' places (more than half would be installed in industries, households and shopping malls). Solar thermal installations could become a major opportunity for Africa, India, the Middle East and the United States.
