Ibereolica plans a 1,171 MW solar-wind hybrid project in Chile

The Spanish energy group Grupo Ibereólica Renovables has starting the environmental qualification procedure for its ERNC Antofagasta project, a hybrid renewable power project including a 675 MW solar PV park and a 496 MW wind project in northern Chile. The US$874m project would also include two 33/500 kV transformer substations for the solar PV plant and the wind park, and a 500 kV transmission line to evacuate the power generation to the National Electric System.

The group is already developing the 550 MW Antofagasta Solar Project worth US$532m in the María Elena district (Environmental Impact Assessment already approved) and it submitted its 794 MW Antofagasta Wind Farm Project worth US$684m to the Environmental Impact Assessment System in December 2020.

Wind accounts for 7% of Chile’s installed capacity, with 2.1 GW. In 2013, CNE approved a legal target of 20% by 2025 for the share of non-conventional renewables in the power mix. The target was reportedly reached in 2020. Furthermore, the country's Energy Roadmap until 2050 targets a 70% share of renewables in electricity production (mainly solar and wind).
