Iberdrola will develop the 3.5 GW VNI West power transmission line in Australia

Iberdrola Australia has been selected as a strategic partner for the development of the VNI West (Victoria to New South Wales Interconnector West) transmission project, which will connect the Australian states of Victoria and New South Wales (Iberdrola press release, 11/11/2025).

VNI West will feature a 240 km, 500 kV double-circuit transmission line and is expected to increase bidirectional transfer capacity by up to 3.5 GW, enabling greater integration of renewable energy generation in both states. In the project’s first phase, Iberdrola will collaborate with VicGrid, Victoria’s new transmission network planning body, to define critical elements including engineering design, financial and technical planning, and cost estimation, according to the company’s statement.

Upon completion of this phase, Iberdrola will submit a proposal for the execution of the project, covering design, construction, ownership, and operation. The project is targeted for completion by 2030.
