Iberdrola submits 1 GW BESS project for environmental assessment (Australia)

Iberdrola Australia has submitted its 1 GW Burrenbring BESS project to Australia’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act for federal environmental assessment (Australian government press release, 14/05/2026). The proposed project is planned for development close to Nebo, Queensland (Australia), and it consists of a 1 GW BESS with up to 2-4 hours of storage capacity (2-4 GWh) to feed into the grid during peak-hours.

According to the proposal, Iberdrola plans to use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery units and to construct an on-site substation with up to six 200 MVA transformers. The project would be connected to Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM) and, if approved, it should have an operational lifespan of 30 years. Iberdrola targets commissioning by 2028, and its being developed separately of the wind project that the company is also proposing on the same site.

The project is aligned with Iberdrola’s AUD1bn (USD1.14bn) investment plan for Australia, which primarily focuses on battery storage development
