Iberdrola secures permit for its 274 MW Tâmega wind project in Portugal

The Spanish energy group Iberdrola has obtained the production licence from the Portuguese Directorate General for Energy and Geology (DGEG) for its 274 MW Tâmega Norte and Tâmega Sul wind projects in in the districts of Vila Real and Braga, in northern Portugal. The wind project has been awarded to Vestas and will consist of the installation of 38 of the Vestas Enventus V172 wind turbines, with a unit capacity of 7.2 MW and a height of 114 metres, to produce 601 GWh/year.

The wind projects will be integrated into the 1.2 GW Tâmega Power Plant System, which includes three power plants, namely the 160 MW Alto Tâmega Hydroelectric Power Plant, the 880 MW Gouvães Pumped Storage Power Plant and the 118 MW Daivões Power Plant, capable of producing 1,766 GWh/year. The €350m Tâmega wind complex is part of an agreement signed with the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund, managed by Norges Bank Investment Management, and it represents the first of its kind to combine wind power with hydroelectric power.

Portugal has an installed capacity of 24.2 GW (end of 2023), of which hydro and wind represent about 34% and 23%, respectively.
