Iberdrola plans to raise the Kitty Hawk wind project capacity to 3.5 GW (US)

The Spanish renewable energy company Iberdrola plans to increase by 1 GW the total capacity of the Kitty Hawk offshore wind project, located off the US states of Virginia and North Carolina, to 3.5 GW (from the initial 2.5 GW). Iberdola owns the US-based company Avangrid which is currently developing the project.

The first phase of the Kitty Hawk project (800 MW) is currently undergoing federal permitting process with the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) that started in August 2021. The first phase could be commissioned by 2024.

The United States target 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 15 GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2035 (only 42 MW were operational at the end of 2021).
