Spanish energy group Iberdrola has announced expansion plans for its activities in the United States: it plans to expand its renewable capacity in the United States by about 50% over the next four years to reach a total combined capacity of 10,000 MW by the end of 2022. Besides, approximately US$15bn will be dedicated to its transmission and distribution systems.
As of 2017, Iberdrola reports a total installed renewable capacity of 6,500 MW in the United States. The company is the third domestic wind power provider behind NextEra Energy and Berkshire Hathaway. Most of the company's domestic wind power projects are onshore but one offshore project is on track, the 800 MW Wineyard Wind park in Massachusetts, which is on schedule to begin construction in 2019 and become operational in 2021 and 2022 for a total cost of US$2.7bn.
Iberdrola has committed to reducing its global CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 2007 levels and become carbon neutral by 2050. As of 2017, the company's total installed power generation capacity stood at 48,800 MW, more than half of which is renewable with the remainder fueled mostly by natural gas, nuclear and coal generation facilities.
