Iberdrola joins large offshore wind project in Massachusetts (US)

Iberdrola's subsidiary Avangrid Renewables has entered into a strategic partnership with Vineyard Wind to jointly develop a large-scale offshore wind power project off the coast of Massachusetts in the United States. Under the terms of the agreement, Avangrid will take over a 50% stake in Vineyard Wind, the project promoter, from Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP).

In 2016, new regulations entered into force in Massachusetts, which stipulate that power companies acquire the production of up to 1,600 MW from offshore wind facilities within 10 years. At the end of the year, three offshore leases were awarded to DONG Energy, Deepwater Wind and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners to develop offshore wind projects.

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Avangrid expect to start building the Vineyard wind park in 2020. Its final capacity will be decided on the basis of technical studies and local characteristics.
