An Iberdrola consortium will develop a 375 MW offshore wind project in Japan

Following Japan’s latest offshore wind auction, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has awarded rights to develop a 375 MW offshore wind project off the coast of Happo, in the Akita Prefecture of northern Japan, to a GK Happo Nioshiro Offshore Wind partnership, a consortium made up of Iberdrola, Japan Renewable Energy Company and Tohoku Electric Power Company. The project will feature 25 fixed bottom foundation wind turbines, each with a capacity of 15 MW. The start of construction is scheduled for 2026, while commissioning is expected for 2029.

Japan plans to commission 10 GW of new offshore wind capacity by 2030 and up to 45 GW by 2040. The country plans to tender about 1 GW of offshore wind projects every year until 2030. As of end-2022, Japan only had 61 MW of operational offshore wind capacity. According to preliminary estimates, Japan surpassed 150 MW of offshore capacity in 2023.
