Iberdrola completes 1.2 GW HVDC line between Quebec (Canada) and the US

Spain’s energy group Iberdrola has announced the commissioning of the New England Clean Energy Connect (NECEC), a high-voltage transmission line linking Quebec (Canada) to the United States (Iberdrola press release, 16/01/2026).

Developed by its US subsidiary Avangrid, the infrastructure transmits hydroelectric power from the Canadian province to New England (US). The infrastructure features a HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) conversion system, a technology that enables efficient electricity transmission over long distances while ensuring compatibility between networks operating asynchronously. With a capacity of 1.2 GW, the interconnection can supply nearly 10% of Massachusetts' electricity consumption, according to the company.

The project, which represents a US$1.65bn investment, is backed by a 40-year Transmission Service Agreement with Hydro-Québec and 20-year contracts with Massachusetts utilities and Hydro-Québe, ensuring stable and predictable revenue.
