Iberdrola commissions the 590 MW Francisco Pizarro solar PV plant in central Spain

Iberdrola has commissioned the 590 MW Francisco Pizarro solar PV plant, the largest in Europe, located in Torrecillas de la Tiesta, in the Extremadura region (central Spain). The solar plant, which required an investment of €300m, is made up of nearly 1.5 million PV modules that will generate enough clean energy to supply more than 334 000 homes.

Iberdrola has guaranteed the project’s feasibility through long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) signed with several companies, and will supply 100% renewable electricity to Danone, Bayer, and PepsiCo to cover the energy needs of their Spanish facilities.

Iberdrola has an installed capacity of more than 19.3 GW and aims to reach 25 GW in the coming years. The company plans to allocate €14.3bn by 2025 for the deployment of renewables and smart grids plan.

In 2021, solar accounted for 15% of Spain’s installed capacity with 17 GW.
