Iberdrola commissions 500 MW Nunez de Balboa solar PV project in Spain

Iberdrola has commissiond its 500 MW Núñez de Balboa solar PV project near Badajoz in Extremadura (western Spain), which is one of the largest solar PV projects in Europe. The €300m project, which was developed in partnership with Ecoenergías del Guadiana, was built in just one year and construction was completed at the end of December 2019.

The project is part of Iberdrola's plans to commission 2,000 MW of solar and wind power in Extremadura by 2022. In addition to the Núñez de Balbo project, the group is developing the 590 MW Francisco Pizarro project in Torrecillas de la Tiesa, the 328 MW Ceclavín project in Alcántara, the 150 MW Arenales project in Caceres, the Campo Arañuelo I and II solar PV projects (150 MW) in Almaraz and the Majada Alata and San Antonio (50 MW each), in Cedillo. Iberdrola also has 300 MW with grid access available to plan another solar PV project. Overall, Iberdrola plans to invest €13bn in renewable projects between 2018 and 2022, to install 3 GW of new renewable capacity in Spain by 2022, and 10 GW by 2030.
