The Spanish energy group Iberdrola has announced the full commissioning of the 496 MW Saint-Brieuc offshore wind project, located in the Brittany region of north-western France. All 62 Siemens Gamesa’s SG 8.0-167 DD wind turbines are now operational and feeding electricity into the French national grid. Ailes Marines, the subsidiary of Iberdrola in charge of developing the project, completed the installation of the last turbine in December 2023. The first turbine was installed in May 2023 and the project is expected to generate around 1.8 TWh/year.
Earlier in May 2024, EDF, Enbridge, CPP Investments, and Skyborn Renewables inaugurated the 500 MW Fécamp offshore wind park, located off the coast of Normandy, in north-western France. With the 480 MW Saint-Nazaire project (inaugurated in 2022) France now has three fully operational commercial-scale offshore wind parks. France plans to reach 40% of electricity produced from renewable sources by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050. France also aims to develop 40 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2050.
